Forward-deployed engineer (FDE)

A forward-deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer embedded with a single customer. The distinguishing feature is that an FDE ships working software directly into the customer’s production environment.

The role originated at Palantir, which found that selling a data platform to intelligence and defense agencies did not work as a straightforward product sale. Production data was classified, schemas were undocumented, and the real workflows were invisible from Palantir’s headquarters. The company’s response was to send engineers into the customer organization, instead of shipping software to it. Internally these engineers were called "deltas", and until around 2016 Palantir employed more of them than it did conventional product engineers.

Palantir’s own framing of the split is that a product engineer’s focus is "one capability, many customers," while an FDE’s is "one customer, many capabilities." An FDE’s output is scoped to a single customer account, rather than to the vendor’s general product.

FDEs typically work on the customer’s premises, embedded with the domain experts who use the software, so they can discover how best to adapt the software to their specific needs. FDEs have an unusual level of exposure to how users really operate, giving them a feedback loop measured in hours and days, rather than release cycles.

For this reason, FDE is a well-trodden path into product and founding roles.
