Business architecture

Business architecture is a blueprint of an enterprise that gives its stakeholders a shared understanding of the organization’s structure — its goals, processes, and capabilities, and the way it operates day-to-day — and uses that shared picture to align strategic objectives with tactical demands.

It is one of the domains typically addressed within a broader enterprise architecture, sitting alongside the information, application, and technology domains, and it often serves as the starting point from which those other views are derived.

Within arc42-style architecture documentation, business architecture underpins the business context, which narrows the same organizational picture down to a single system’s boundary with its business environment.
